THE
PRACTICE
KUNDALINI
Our
primary practice is called Kundalini Yoga, one of the most subtle
and demanding of all yogic disciplines. The goal of yoga is the
awakening of man's inner spirit and the realization of one's potential
as a human and a spiritual being. The attainment of this goal
is viewed as a lifetime's effort, to be worked at on a day to
day basis with a deepening sense of dedication, discipline, and
purpose. Growing up, in the physical and metaphysical sense, is
the continuing process and motivation of our practice. Limitations
to growth, whether emotional, mental, physical, or psychological,
are viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome. Through conscious
effort and demanding spiritual work students learn to transcend
their individual limitations and to graciously accept the rigors
of continual change that profound growth and evolvement bring
about.
The
practice of Kundalini Yoga is not new. It is the method of meditation
of the siddhas, or perfected beings, and is derived from the teachings
of the great Shaiivite philosophers and sages of Kashmir, in the
north of India. Kundalini Yoga was first expounded in the Malini
Vijrya Tantra and the Vijnana Vbhairrava, scriptural texts that
are over 4000 years old. Next, it was taught in the numerous Yoga
Upanishads. It progressed from a mostly oral to a fully written
tradition in the 10th century when the Shiva Sutras were first
revealed to Abina vas Gupta.
