THE
PRACTICE
YOGA
Technically
speaking, Yoga is a science of spiritual growth taught and practiced
for over 5000 years in the Far Eastern countries of the world.
Although its traditions are rooted in Hindu and Buddhist culture,
yoga is not a religion. Rather it is a system of human development
that serves people of all religions to discover the essential
unity of man's inner spirit. The term "yoga" comes from
the Sanskrit root "yuj" meaning to unite or union.
There
are several schools of yoga practice but the underlying common
principles are that a person is already complete and whole, that
the knowledge of this wholeness is veiled and that through conscious
effort one can unite the individual soul with the supreme soul,
which is our Self. The practice of yoga does not interfere with
religious teachings or customs. Rather it evokes a new depth of
spiritual understanding. Our practice includes people from many
religious and social backgrounds, all of whom follow the dictates
of their own personal heritage without any disruption to the group
as a whole. The result is not so much a melting pot of religious
traditions but an appreciation for the oneness of all religion.
